Depots & Allocations

Kunming Depot

subdepots: n.a.

Operation

Locomotives of Kunming Depot are responsible for all trains on the mainlines east of Kunming, espcially the Kunming-Liupanshui-(Guiyang) and Kunming-Weishe-(Nanning) lines. Passenger trains usually are hauled by SS3 or SS7C electrics. Freight trains to Liupanshui trains are SS3-double headed or have got a single SS3B. Those on the Nanning line are double-headed by mixed combinations of classes SS3 and SS7. Kunmings engines work as fas as Liupanshui (??) and Weishe where loco changes take place. It is not known to me which locos operates Liupanshui-Weishe and Hongguo-Qujing line.
The diesel lines from Kunming to Yuxi, Dongchuang and Geyitou-Xiquele are expected to be worked by Kunming based DF4Bs. The Yuxi line, however, is confirmed to be worked that manner.
Shunting duties in the area are handled by quite late DF5s (many 16xx to 19xx locos) or even later DF7Gs. These locos are presumed to have replaced the last DF1 und DF2 around year 2000.

Kaiyuan Depot

subdepots: Yiliang

Operation

Kaiyuan depot is responsible for the entire traffic along the Yunnan Tielu 1000-mm network between Kunming Bei, Kaiyuan, Hekou and Baojiu. At the northern end near Kunming, Yiliang is a subdepot of Kaiyuan. All trains change loco here. Between Yiliang and Kunming, trains have to manage a steep gradient against Kunming bound trains which often requires double or even triple heading of freight trains.
Though new DF21 are being delivered at the moment, the future of the 1000-mm network is not clear as there is a project to build a standard gauge line from Yuxi via Mengzi to Hekou (and further on into Vietnam) which will more or less parallel the narrow gauge line.

Guangtong Depot

subdepots: n.a.

Operation

Guangtong`s SS3 haul all trains between Kunming, Guangtong and Panzhihua. The Guangtong to Dali Joint-Venture Line is diesel worked, probably using DF4Bs but this is not 100% confirmed. DF4Cs may work there as well. Shunting duties along the north-west of Kunming Xi (exluded) are Guangtong duties as well (DF5).
